There was nothing left of the money except the boxes
of baseball cards. True, they weren’t actual money, but they were an
investment. Someday, she would sell them for much more than she paid. The house
was gone, the four-wheelers, the camping trailer, the mustang, the friends. She
had none of those things before the settlement, so she was still ahead. On
Saturdays she would take the bus down to the little store where she bought the
cards and talk with the owner. They would talk about how valuable they were,
and she would feel better. She would feel better.
